Miami's culinary scene is constantly undergoing a renaissance. Each week without fail we're learning of or checking out new restaurants with big dreams of becoming our new "it" and/or staple food spot. We don't know how our restaurateurs do it, bro. It's such a make-or-break business, made all the harder in the 305 by our seasonality, the rent being too damn high, and how capricious we are as locals. (We're always searching for that next new and shiny thing—and, can you blame us?) So, when a new spot that is worth checking out opens, we like to give them props for doing things right and bring them to your attention so you too can experience their magic, such as our latest food find in our very own South of Fifth 'hood: French 27.
What we like about French 27 is that they provide an all-around solid dining experience, an uncharacteristic achievement for a SoFi restaurant. Part of that achievement comes from taking over the large indoor-outdoor space previously occupied by Porfirio's and giving it a modern French twist with a romantic vibe. We're talking low-lit everything, a stream of classic film footage, and a collection of rose petals that puts the Queen of Heart's garden to shame. We wouldn't have decorated the space like that, but it works for the space and the concept.
Their second win is their menu. They've chosen to deliver contemporary French cuisine and they deliver it well. During our visit we spread our appetite over three courses starting with the giant black tiger shrimp cocktail with tomatillo avocado mousse, the chipotle infused burrata cheese and diver scallops appetizers, followed by the mediterranean turbot, the duo duck confit, and the short ribs braisé au jus for entrées, and ending with a sampler of desserts (because YOLO). While we enjoyed each one, we were most impressed by their more traditional French plates, including surprisingly the bread—it was warm and crusty and was served with gourmet French Échiré butter—and the duo duck confit. Let the record show that bread does not usually mark high on our list and that we've only ever liked one other duck dish in our lives (from Alpenglow Stube in Keystone) so you know they have to be doing something right at French 27.
The French 27 experience for us was rounded out by their excellent service. Never in our Miami lives have we felt so diligently attended to so it was a pleasant surprise to have multiple servers tending to our needs throughout the night. Coupled with a great locale and their delicious menu, which we've previewed in food porn photos below, French 27's service makes for a must-try dining experience.
