This month we have been traveling like crazy, first to Hutchinson Island, then to Seattle and now to D.C. We've spent more time out of Miami than in Miami, making it particularly hard to keep a pulse on what is going on back home. It's times like these we're extremely grateful for our contributors. In today's post, contributor Belen of A Hint of Life blog talks about the Toro Toro Miami relaunch party she attended on our behalf two weeks ago and their delicious (and spicy!) new signature drink.
On Tuesday night, after the long President's Day weekend, I headed to Toro Toro Miami's re-launch party in Downtown Miami's Intercontinental Hotel. Although I had been to the Intercontinental, Toro Toro had never been a part of my experience and, to my surprise, the restaurant turned out to be a harmonious combination of contrasting concepts. The Intercontinental is gigantic so Toro Toro is cozy by comparison, but its atmosphere is big and loud (à la Latin America). It's fine dining menu and luxurious setting exude an air of exclusivity while remaining approachable.
When we walked in, we were greeted with a guacamole stand followed by rosé champagne, both of which of course I devoured. As I made myself through the attendees to get a better glimpse of the restaurant's new digs, I found myself face-to-face with a giant ice statue and, more importantly, the bar. You have an idea what comes next right? Toro Toro's new signature drink, the Ahumado!
Intrigued by the cocktail, I naively asked the bartender to walk me through the ingredients. He made it halfway through before I realized I wasn't going to be able to remember the giant list. Lucky for us, I was smart enough to hand him my phone and ask him to write them down in my notes. It is comprised of mezcal, blood orange liqueur, blood orange, lime, yellow bell pepper, agave over a jalapeño ice cube. It was SO spicy. (Seriously, I only make it halfway through). If you like heat in your drinks (think Micheladas), then the Ahumado is perfect for you!
The evening was an exciting blur of networking, traditional Mexican hors d'oeuvres, and delicious Mexican donuts topped with chocolate and caramel, accompanied by live entertainment. Next time you're in Downtown Miami, don't be afraid to explore the Intercontinental, more specifically to stop by Toro Toro. You won't be disappointed! And, if you need an excuse to stop by and check out their new look or their new menu, register for their upcoming mixology and wine classes this month by calling 305-372-4710:
